Significant Others - How to Get Your Spouse a Job

It’s amazing how many college students are now getting married coming out of college.  I am continually stunned at how many married new engineers I meet at the company I work for.  I’m sure one of the challenges these folks faced is “how do I get my spouse a job?”

The answer is a resounding “Yes!”

Increasingly, companies that hire one person are willing to find a job within their company (or at least a different company in the same geographic area), just so they can increase the chances of hiring the first person.

Realize that talented people are very difficult to find, so once a company has identified that they want to hire you, you have more leverage than you may realize.  And hopefully you also realize that your spouse has something to offer that company too, and there is likely a position for him or her there, regardless of education or desires.

So how do you get this done?  Simple.  At some point in the recruiting process, just let your recruiter know that you are engaged or married, and that you want to have your spouse be in the same location as you.  Ask the recruiter what their policy is on that, and if there is anything the company would be able to do to help, should you be offered a position.

It’s a perfectly legitimate question, and the recruiter will absolutely not punish you or prevent you from getting an offer just because they don’t want to deal with the hassle of it all.  Don’t worry, just ask!  Think about it another way—would you really want to work for a company that punished people who asked about that?  I thought not.
