The Myth of the 3 Year Manager
During the last career fair I went to as a recruiter, I can’t possibly tell you how many college students said they wanted to be managers within 3 years of hiring on with a company. As I’ve found out in industry, it’s actually unbelievably arrogant to make such a statement when you are still figuring out how to find a job.
Just for a second, let’s play out what a company would look like if everyone was a manager after 3 years… Can you imagine how many layers of managers and bureaucracy there would be? Everyone would be a manager! Sounds like a Pyramid Scheme… It’s insane!
To assume that you will be a manager that quickly assumes that you are better than a whole mess of other people who have come before you, and that is what I consider to be the ultimate arrogance.
I get that you want to be a manager, I can dig it. I want to be a manager too, and I will be in the future. But to say that you want to get there in 3 years is just not something you do. As a recruiter, we look at that as a red flag that the candidate doesn’t want to do the work in the trenches to earn it. And that’s not something you want a recruiter holding over your head.
We have found the best candidates are the ones that have high aspirations and standards, and at the same time want to start by learning about the company, their position, and how they can make a significant impact from there. Whether or not they want to be a manager is irrelevant, it’s their attitude they display coming in that makes the difference!
