When I say External job posting websites, I mean sites like Monster.com, and others like it.  Personally, I didn’t use these for my search, but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t be an excellent resource for you to use, should you choose.

These sites are essentially the same as the internal sites I discuss previously in this article, with the exception that they are clearly wide open to anyone in the country to post jobs and to post their resume.  You are then competing with potentially thousands of applicants for a job, compared to probably fewer than 50 with an internal site.

To me, this is again a numbers game.  The more you apply to, the better the chance you have of getting a response.  The other thing you might find is that it is used by many smaller companies (that don’t have resources to send recruiting teams to multiple universities at once like the large companies do). 

You probably will be able to find something extremely rewarding through an external website, there is no reason to discount or discourage you from using it, just know that what you put in is what you’ll get out.  Because of the high number of postings available, you definitely need to anticipate putting in a lot of time to read through them and decide if you want to apply to them.  My guess is that you will not scratch the surface of the total number of jobs available!
