Basics of the Job Search - Company Websites

Individual company websites are absolutely a good place to go to look at opportunities as well.  Almost every company has a portion of their site devoted to Careers, and finding that page should be simple.  They generally include information on the roles available at the company, salaries, information about the culture and benefits at the company, etc.  If a company isn’t recruiting on campus, you can get the same information from their website.

Companies also usually have a portion of their careers site where you can search for open jobs and apply for them.  For some companies (like Boeing), this is even how they do recruiting on campus, by telling you to search and apply for specific jobs online.  So, understanding and using these websites should be a key component of your job search strategy.

Here’s the scoop on company websites:  If you go to the Career Fair, you will find that most companies tell you to apply to their website online.  It’s not their way of blowing you off, but instead they need to have your electronic application to start the process for legal reasons.  Many of them have a specific opportunity they want you to apply for (like “job number 12463”).  I suggest you apply to these companies online after you talk to them at career fair and get any special instructions from them.  That way, you don’t have to re-apply or fix your application.

For companies that don’t come to the career fair, this is an excellent way to get attention at your targeted companies.  One last thing to note is that sometimes these online applications can take a while (some took me up to an hour!), so be selective about which ones you do apply to!
