How a Totally Average, Run of the Mill Engineering Student Got a High-Paying Engineering Job, and How You Can Too!
This proven system will work for internships and permanent positions, no matter what your GPA is!

Bob Halgren found his dream co-op job and began a great career after graduation from college. You can, too, using his system. |
Dear Friend-
So, you’re graduating from college soon, and you’re looking for a job. Not just any ‘ole job, but a career. Maybe even a mechanical or electrical engineering career.
Many of your friends who graduated last year took uninspiring positions at boring companies just so they could get their parents off their backs. “Well, you’re graduating; better find some employment, because after you graduate, we aren’t paying your bills any more.”
Others decided to go to graduate school because they didn’t find anything they liked, and they were able to convince their parents that the illusive job would be had once graduate school was complete.
Some are still looking.
And then there are the lucky few who actually screamed their way through the interview and sales questions, did find a position, are making tons of money, and even having a blast!
Or is it luck?
“….they had a friend…..”
“….they had a 4.0 GPA…..”
“….their major was in high demand….”
“….their dad owns the company….”
What if it weren’t just luck?
What if it were just a formula?
A simple formula – for finding the perfect job.
And what if you could get the formula – right here, right now?
A few years ago, I was in the exact same position you are in.
I was a sophomore at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. A Mechanical Engineering student. With decent grades, but not straight As or anything like that.
Ever since I was about 4 years old, I wanted to go into the space program. In my travels around campus, I discovered that there were co-op opportunities at NASA open to U of M Engineering students.
That was exciting! The thought that I might actually be able to work at NASA was pretty cool. I knew that if I could get in as a co-op and show them what a talented guy I was, there was a good chance I could land a full time position with them, and be living my dream.
I could hardly wait to submit my application and resume, so I started working on my resume.
The name part was easy. Then there was the address. A little more difficult – do I use my college address or my home address?
Whew! Made a decision, and got on to the next part.
Telephone number, email address. All that information was pretty straight-forward.
Then there was the “Objective.” While it sounds like I should put what kind of job I wanted, a friend of mine (who had a job he loved) told me that I really should use the Objective statement to let the employer know what my skills and abilities are.
So, I decided to give it a try. I really wanted this internship.
I spent hours writing an Objective. The first few hundred attempts all sounded the same, but finally I came up with something that really conveyed my skills:
“Seeking a challenging co-op position in the mechanical engineering field utilizing my design, hands-on, and leadership skills.”
OK. Now for Education. That should really be easy – just list my classes, right?
But, do I list all of the classes, or just the engineering classes?
It might seem that only the engineering classes would make any difference to NASA (or any other employer), but I was just a sophomore with few engineering classes, and listing only those would make my Education section look really light.
And I wanted this co-op really bad! I knew I had to be a standout among the throngs that were sure to apply along with me.
I decided to include other courses that related to my engineering coursework, but weren’t part of the major. That filled it up a bit.
Now on to the Experience portion of the resume.
I’ll admit that I had some pretty lame work experience in high school. I worked one summer for my dad – pounding nails on construction sites. Another summer I worked for the County of San Diego, pushing paper in the Office of Revenue and Recovery. (Yeah – the County’s collection agency – not at all related to engineering.)
But it was experience, and in each of those jobs, I had taken on more challenging assignments than other students, and used the same engineering and organizational skills I thought might benefit NASA.
All I had to do was frame it in those terms.

I landed my dream job at NASA as a freshman and worked with this group of students. Using this formula, you can do the same. |
And so the process went on. Throughout the development of my resume and in filling out the application, I tried to figure out what skills they might want me to have. Then I looked at what I could do, and how I could fill their need. Once I did that, it was pretty easy to complete the resume and application.
The application was finished and submitted on a Thursday night in December. Three days later, I was getting calls from NASA. Three of them – in 3 different departments.
I was one excited dude! My dream was about to become a reality.
Within a couple of weeks, I had a co-op position lined up and I was on my way to Cape Canaveral in January.
Two days before I was heading back to Michigan to pack my gear and drive to Florida to begin my new adventure, I decided I should probably buy some clothes to wear to my new job.
Now You've Got the Job - What do You Wear?
The next problem – what kind of clothes to buy?
I quickly realized that I was at the mercy of some sales-guy at the Mens’ Wearhouse. And what did he know? He was a salesman – pushing whatever they had in the store, and convincing me to spend a ton of money.
He might have read a book or flyer about working as an engineer, but, frankly, I’d be surprised to learn that he had graduated from high school.
Fortunately I had my limited work experience at the County of San Diego, and the advice of a few friends and family members to draw on.
I survived the shopping trip, and walked out of the store having spent $949.52. That night I thought I had made some great choices. However, I was about to discover that most of the money I spend on clothes was wasted. Sad but true.
More Resume Writing and Another Job Search
The good news is that I completed two co-op stints with NASA (the maximum allowed), covering two semesters and two summers. It was my dream opportunity.
The bad news is that by my senior year, NASA had a hiring freeze, and, as much as they said they wanted to, they couldn’t offer me a full time position when I graduated – and I was facing a job search once again.
This time, though, it was different.
I already had a resume that worked. During the time I worked there, I talked to several people in HR and in my department at NASA who told me what it was about my resume that made it stand apart from the others.
Armed with that information, I knew how to make my resume even better.
Through my fraternity at the University of Michigan, I came in contact with several men who had great positions in fabulous companies, doing work they loved.
I talked to them about what they would be looking for in a new employee, and what they thought was the appropriate way to dress for a job interview.
And, maybe even more importantly, I knew what kinds of job interview questions they might ask, and what kind of answers would impress their company.
Now I knew how to dress and how to interview.
Last, but certainly not least, I explored the whole “salary negotiation” arena, and discovered strategies I never would have thought of. Some of them I stumbled on by accident. Others I learned from friends, through their experience. And yet others I discovered too late to benefit me, but they can benefit you.
When the Career Search Job Fair came to campus that Fall, I was ready, and here are the stats:
- 14 resume submissions
- 9 first round interviews
- 8 second round interview offers (attended 5; declined 3)
- 5 job offers – in case you didn’t do the math, that’s 100% of the interviews I went on, I got a job offer from! (And 4 were from companies I had picked as first choice companies before the career fair)
- 1 fantastic position, at a great company, making a fabulous salary
|
And what about my friends:
- some are still looking for jobs
- some took jobs they don’t like, not even related to their degree, just so they could make money
- some went to graduate school
- some lucky ones found jobs they like
- and some are asking me how I did it!
What I realized is that you don’t need to have a 4.0 GPA (mine was 3.2), and you don’t have to have the greatest work experience (I pushed paper in the County of San Diego's Office of Revenue and Recovery and pounded nails before I got my first co-op) to get the greatest job.
But you do need a formula and some basic skills that are simple and cheap.
And I am anxious to share my Success Formula with you.
After all, you would like to tell your friends and family that you landed the best career opportunity in the world and a great salary, wouldn’t you?
Imagine how that would feel.
You’ve spent 4 or 5, or maybe even 6 years attending classes in a college or university. You worked your brains to the max, studying history, English, science, and stuff you didn’t even know existed or want to know existed. And now it’s time.
Maybe your family thinks you are a loser who won’t find a job. Wouldn’t it be a shock if you found one, let alone found a great job, and were even able to turn down offers?
Maybe some foolish prof told you that you were barely smart enough to pass his class, and definitely would not be able to make it in the work force. Wouldn’t it be great to prove him wrong?
Or maybe your friends are secretly betting that you won’t get even one offer. This is your chance to prove that you’ve got your act together and can get a better job than they ever even thought of getting.
But how?
Time is flying by. With daily quizzes, weekly tests, monthly papers, term papers, the end of the year speech mixed in with all of those parties, well, it’s hard to think about how to fill out an application, let alone figure out what to wear and what to say.
That’s where I come in.
After all, in my last two job searches, I proved that I have the key to getting the perfect job.
And the good news for you is that I want to share it with you.
You see, I’m an engineer. And, you know what that means…we like to keep track of actions and reactions and set about to improve the next actions.
And that’s just what I did. Each step along the way, I was taking notes of what worked and what needed to be improved in my job search process. Then I made changes, and improved stuff until I got it right.
And how do I know I have it right now?
Well, I told you I have friends who have worked for large companies for several years. And after I got my job, I asked them what I could have changed to make my resume stronger, my interview more interesting, and myself more presentable.
Then I boiled it all down into a system, packaged it up so it’s easy to read and follow, and now it’s ready for you!

I feel so confident you will see the value from these pages alone, that I am willing to share the first 11 pages of the Guide FOR FREE
Click here to Look Inside |
“That’s all fine and good,” you say. “It worked for you, how do I know it will work for me? After all, we’ve already established that my friends and family think I’m a loser.”
Well, I won’t ask you to take my word for it. After my system worked so well for me, a couple of my classmates asked if I would help them in their job search.
How could I refuse?
After seeing my success, a friend asked if I would help her with her job search.
So, I transformed my notes into a Guidebook, so she would know what to do and how to do it. We re-hauled her resume, she choose some new clothes, and we did some practice interviews. Six months before graduation, she landed a great job.
She told me this:
"This book was definitely instrumental in getting my job. It taught me how to write my resume as well as how to navigate the career fair to get interviews with the companies I was interested in. (I was even able to get highly competitive interviews with companies completely unrelated to my major.)
"Most importantly, it showed me how to prepare for my interviews to land the job… and I did!!! Thank you so much!"

After seeing these results, I decided I should write the system so my friends in other cities could get great jobs, too.
But before I spent a bunch of time writing, I thought I should check around and see if anyone else had a similar system, let alone the same one.
In my research, I uncovered a ton of resume-writing schemes, but none of the other systems had all of the components of mine. One had a great section on how to write an Objective, but fell down when it came to writing the Experience section – unless you had a crap-load of experience.
Another system showed how to write a decent Experience section, but their Education section fell way short.
Of course, the University of Michigan Career Office system had a great Education Section, but their Objective section said nothing.
If you were really clever, you could take the three of these, put the good parts together and come up with a great resume. But how would you know which were the good sections?
And Then There Are the “What do I Wear and What do I Say?” Parts
And how would you know how to dress? Oh, there are plenty of “dress for success” books all over the place, but they are usually written for our parents or guys 10 years older who are fairly established in their careers.
Our generation is different. I don’t know about you but, I don’t want to be wearing a stuffy black suit and gold tie. I’d rather be in a polo shirt when I show up for an interview.
However, unless you are interviewing to be a cook at McDonald’s, the polo shirt probably wouldn’t get you past the initial handshake. But, what is the right outfit? And does it really make a difference in whether you get the job or not?
You bet it does; and using my system, you will know exactly what to wear. And it doesn't need to be uncomfortable or ugly.
Did you know that most of the time whether or not you get the job is determined within the first 30 seconds of meeting your prospective employer? And you may not even have time to open your mouth and sound brilliant or clever.
Hard as that fact is to swallow, if you are dressed even just a little bit “off,” your chances of landing that great job are significantly reduced – especially if your competition is using my system.
But, that’s not going to happen to you – because you are going to have every detail of what to wear right at your fingertips.
And Now – The Interview - What Do You Say?
Oh, that part!
Yes, you will have to talk with them. And it would be a good idea if you knew how to answer their questions. And we’ve got you covered there, all right.
But it’s more than just answering their questions. Did you know that you can make a fantastic impression if you ask some key questions?
It’s no secret that people like to talk about themselves – and their company. Especially some of the old geezers who have been around a company for centuries. They like to think that they are doing something valuable to humanity by working for their company. And, in many cases, they really are.
But the deal is that they would like to think that you would enjoy working there as much as they do.
So, you can show them you are really interested by asking a few questions about their company. Key questions, though – not some lame question like “what color are the walls in your lunch room?”
Using my system, you will be asking questions they will remember you for. When they get back to their “home base,” when they hear your name, one of the interviewers will say “Now, that’s a guy who really wants to work for us. He is so interested; he researched our company and asked how our brand new plant in China is working out."
Plus, you will know how to respond to their interview questions using a formula to answer the impossible. Once you know the questions they will ask, you can amaze them with your thoughtful answers.
When They Offer you the Position, Negotiate Your Way to Higher Pay -
Leveraging One Job Offer Against Another.
Where have you ever seen anything telling you how to negotiate a great salary?
Most stuff I read implied that I should take the salary they offered, and be thankful I was offered the position. It was a real eye-opener to discover that everything was up for grabs, and if a company wanted you enough, they would “figure out a way to pay you more.”
But how do you know what is reasonable and what kinds of possibilities there are?
- Might they pay for your past education?
- Would the company pay for your future degree?
- What if the degree were in business instead of engineering?
- Is there a possibility the company would pay for your move?
- And how about a ‘signing bonus’ – like athletes? Did you know that companies can pay that? And sometimes do – thousands of dollars in signing bonuses!
Using my system will open your eyes to the possibilities, and give you the strategies to maneuver your way through the pay maze, frequently leveraging one job offer against another, so you can get paid the thousands of dollars you are worth! If your starting pay is too low, it is nearly impossibly to catch up to where you should be.
You can’t take any chances with your financial future! You must have the right words to maximize your beginning salary.
This System will Make Finding a Job as Simple as Making Chocolate Chip Cookies
The bottom line is that this easy-to-use system is the only complete system on the planet. This resource guides you from start to finish, showing you how to:
- Write a resume so you get an interview
- Research the company so you show the interviewer know that you “know your stuff”
- Wear the right clothes, giving you the confidence to act as if you are already employed at that company
- Answer every interview question they throw at you confidently and brilliantly – reliably delivering your message
- Negotiate your way to the highest salary possible – amazing your family, friends, and possibly even yourself.

And it is written in easy-to-understand language. Really.
I thought about including some engineering techno-speak, but decided that looking for a job was complicated enough. So I made these instructions understandable and easy to follow.
You don’t even need to be an engineer to follow this system. It’s all laid out so all you need to do is fill in the blanks, making it your resume and your interview.
You Show Up Mentally Ready, Too
And I even included a section on getting “psyched” for the interview. After all, half of the process is the confidence part. You could have the best resume and wear the perfect clothes yet still fall flat on your face because your fear of the process shows through to the interviewer.
There is a whole chapter devoted to getting yourself mentally ready for “the game.” That may sound weird, but if you treat it like a game (admittedly a serious one), you will win.
You’ve seen the students who are no better than you, and no smarter than you, but get better deals. Maybe a better assignment or grade because the prof likes them. Maybe they win some award because their project was on a topic that the judges liked better than yours.
No more second place, thrid place, or last place. Using this system, you will get the position of your dreams, at a salary you thought was possible only in your dreams.
By Now You Are Probably Wondering How Much Your Investment is to Put Me on Your Team
If you or anyone you know has ever hired a personal coach for any kind of training, you’ll know that a normal hourly rate might be somewhere in the range of $40-50, and some coaches charge in the hundreds of dollars per hour.
But, let’s just say $45 per hour for an average coach, and the coach would spend 20 hours with you. That would set you back about $900. And, your coach may or may not help you figure out how to dress right for the interview, or how to adequately prepare you for the questions you might have to answer.
Or, you can send your basic information to a resume writing service that will just write your resume – in some generic style – and pay $250.00. Just for the resume! Sure, you will have a completed resume. One that is just like everyone else’s, but you still won’t have a clue how to evaluate the list of companies you are considering and what kind of questions to ask them so you can make a better decision.
And, none of those folks will even hint at the whole aspect of negotiating your salary. After all, they believe you just take what the company offers.
Or, you could go to the college library and check out a bunch of resume-writing guides, interview guides, and whatever else you think might help. Then you could spend weeks looking through them picking up a tidbit from each and then putting it all together.
But, we all know that, even as a student, your time is worth something, and right now, it’s probably more important to be spending your time studying for your classes than researching how to write a resume and conduct an interview.
And speaking of negotiating salary. If I hadn’t negotiated my salary, I would be making at least $7,500 per year less than I am making. Plus, I got my employer to pay for moving my antique classic car (a 1939 Ford fully restored) across the country that they normally don’t pay for, which translated into an additional $2200.00 - tax free!
We all know that it is difficult, if not impossible, to catch up when you start off at a lower salary. Oh, sometimes they can make it up in a promotion. But many companies are limited to a percent increase in salary – even when you get a huge promotion!
So, when you translate that into a lifetime of earnings, you are talking about thousands of dollars. Using this system put an additional $9700.00 in my pocket before I even showed up to work.
My Pain is Your Gain
This system was developed from my experience – not reading some book and putting together theoretical ideas.
Each time I went through a stage in the process, from writing my resume to negotiating my salary, I painstakingly recorded everything I did. As I was writing everything down, I was careful to record the results from each action, so I could evaluate each step and determine whether I needed to make some adjustment.
Plus the formula has been used successfully by several of my friends. I’m sure you can imagine how that went for tracking. Getting them to follow the system exactly and then writing down their results took a bunch of time. But it was the only way I knew to accurately test the system.
"I've never felt that a book on interview and resume style actually
made a direct improvement on my professional standing before I read
Bob's guide.
"I was able to take the things I learned and immediately
improve my resume and attitude at career fairs - and this year, I got
5 internship offers from around the country, at top companies like Dow
Chemical, General Electric, and General Motors.
"I'm much more
confident when approaching recruiters, and taking this more personal
approach really has made the difference.
"This book has already paid
dividends, not only in salary, but also in work experience."

"During my senior year in college, I was doing all the “right” things to get a job, or so I thought. I was working very hard, but all of my work was getting me nowhere. I had interview after interview but I didn’t make any progress. Meanwhile, I was watching Bob get offer after offer from great companies. I finally decided to go to him and ask for help.
"After a few coaching sessions and some help with my resume, I was ready to start my job search again – this time doing it the right way. Within the month, I had two second-round interviews. One month later, I got my first offer letter.
"Looking back, I have no doubt that I wouldn’t be in the position I am now without Bob’s help!
"Thanks, Bob!"
